John Lequire Adams, aged 24 years and 8 months, a labourer born in Cooktown, enlisted at Townsville on 11th December 1915. His next of kin was Mrs Rosetta Adams of Cooktown. With service number 5032 he was appointed to the 9th Battalian as a Private. He embarked on "Star of Victoria" at Sydney on 31st March, 1916, and disembarked at Port Said on 5th May. On 10th May he was admitted to the Third Australian General Hospital with phthisis and on 24th May he was invalided to Australia from Suez on H.T. "Port Sydney" arriving in Sydney on 28th July, 1916. He was discharged on 30th August, 1916 because of pulmonary disease. After the war, John Lequire Adams married Kathleen Maude and eventually settled in Herberton. Their son John Lawrence, was killed in the Second World war in New Guinea - a pilot officer. We have not found a direct link with Douglas Shire other than his listing on the Shire Roll of Honour.
